The 16 and 17 of July 2007 we are going to have several seminars presented by Prof. Valentina Zharkova, Prof. Robert von Fay-Siebenburgen and Dr. Elena Khomenko.

*****************************************************************
*                  CSPA SEMINAR SERIES 2007                     *
*****************************************************************
MONDAY JULY 16th; 11am
Location: Rm345, Bldg 28

Speaker: Elena Khomenko

Title: "Structure and Dynamics of Solar Magnetic Features"

Abstract:
In this talk we will present some recent results of the study of the structure and dynamics of solar magnetic elements both from observations and numerical simulations.

On the one hand, diagnostic methods of measuring the magnetic field vector of solar magnetic elements will be described.
The Stokes spectra contain a detailed information on magnetized photospheric plasma and its interaction with convection. The interpretation of high-resolution observations requires sophisticated techniques to be involved such as radiative transfer of polarized light in realistic model atmospheres.

On the other hand, recent MHD simulations of wave propagation
from the photosphere to the chromosphere in magnetic structures with different size will be given. We compare the behaviour
of waves in a thick flux tube with a size similar to a small sunspot with the behaviour of a small-scale thin flux tube with a size typical
for the solar network elements.

The final aim of the combined diagnostics of observations and simulations is the interpretation of the observed oscillations in terms of MHD waves.

...................................................................

Monash School of Mathematical Sciences COLLOQUIUM
...................................................................

Title: Wave dynamics in the lower solar atmosphere
Speaker: Prof Robert von Fay-Siebenburgen (Sheffield)
When:      Monday July 16, 3.00pm
Where:     Seminar room M345

The dynamic interaction between solar photospheric motions and the magnetic structures in the lower solar atmosphere is a challenging to understand. Coherent motions, e.g. acoustic or p-modes play a key role for local dynamics of the solar atmosphere ranging from the low chromosphere deeply even into the corona. In my talk our latest analytical and numerical results on how photospheric motions interact with the magnetic structures and waveguides of the transitional layer between the photosphere and the corona will be addressed. Jet formation and wave leakage will be discussed, and, how the wave coupling could be used for atmospheric diagnostic studies using atmospheric magneto-seismology and connectivity studies.

*****************************************************************
*                  CSPA SEMINAR SERIES 2007                     *
*****************************************************************
TUESDAY JULY 17th; 11am
Location: Rm350, Bldg 28

Speaker: Valentina Zharkova (Bradford University)

Title: "High Energy Particles and Induced Radiative Signatures in Solar Flares"

Abstract:
I will explore a few effects of high energy particles on a flaring atmosphere dynamics: kinetic effects of electrons and protons during their precipitaion into a flaring atmosphere, their observed hard X-ray emission, their resulting heating functions and the ambient plasma hydrodynamic response to the heating by electrons and\or protons. Also the radiative signatures of non-thermal excitation and ionisations caused by these fast particles will be presented. The timescales and energy scales of each process are to be evaluated comparing to the observed signatures of solar quakes and their possible effects on the techniques detecting quakes.

Talk Hamed Moradi

Hamed is giving a talk on May 25 at 11am/ M345.
